Born in Edinburgh, Tommy Smith took up a scholarship to study at Berklee College of Music in Boston at age sixteen, where he then joined Gary Burton’s band. He has gone on to record over twenty albums as a leader, and has worked with Joe Lovano, David Liebman, Benny Golson, Chick Corea, Tommy Flanagan, John Scofield, John Patitucci, Jack DeJohnette and Kenny Wheeler.
24-year-old Irish rising-star drummer/composer David Lyttle’s 2008 activities include collaborations with world-renowned musicians such as Greg Osby, Jean Toussaint and Soweto Kinch, and performances in New York, Eastern Europe and the UK. This special one-off trio meeting features internationally-acclaimed Scottish saxophonist Tommy Smith, who also makes a much-awaited return visit to Belfast, and the US bass colossus Michael Janisch.
US bassist Michael Janisch has worked in the groups of Joe Lovano, George Garzone and Roy Hargrove among many others. He is now based in London and has almost instantly become one of Britain’s most prominent musicians. This performance also features an opening set by Belfast guitar protegy Mark McKnight with Michael Janisch and David Lyttle.
